Taipei is hosting the Net Zero City Expo and Net Zero City Leaders Summit from March 18 to March 21, 2025, at the Taipei Nangang Exhibition Center’s Hall 2. The event, centered around the theme of “Digital and Green Transition,” aims to highlight Taiwan’s commitment to carbon neutrality, smart urban development, and AI-driven sustainability solutions.

Organized by the National Development Council (NDC) in collaboration with various government bodies and private sector representatives, the summit serves as a global platform for discussing climate action, policy implementation, and green technology innovation. Over 2,800 international guests from 138 cities and 59 countries are participating, reflecting strong global interest in Taiwan’s net-zero transition strategies.

Key Highlights of the Expo and Summit

1. Taiwan’s Commitment to Net Zero by 2050

Taiwan has set ambitious carbon reduction goals for 2030 and 2035 as part of its strategy to achieve net-zero emissions by 2050. The NDC’s Net Zero Policy Pavilion at the expo showcases the country’s key policies, including:

  • Expansion of renewable energy sources (solar, wind, and hydroelectric power).
  • Development of low-carbon transportation networks, including electric vehicles (EVs) and smart public transit systems.
  • Carbon capture and storage (CCS) initiatives.
  • AI-driven energy efficiency solutions for urban planning and governance.

According to Kao Shien-quey (高仙桂), Deputy Head of the NDC, the event demonstrates Taiwan’s expertise in integrating AI and sustainable practices into public policy.

2. Cities as Net-Zero Innovation Hubs

Recognizing that cities are the primary test beds for net-zero solutions, 12 local governments from across Taiwan have joined the expo to showcase their AI-powered low-carbon transition projects. These projects include:

  • Smart traffic management systems to reduce emissions in urban areas.
  • Energy-efficient smart grids designed for residential and commercial buildings.
  • IoT-enabled waste reduction and recycling systems.

These initiatives aim to create climate-resilient urban environments while enhancing public governance through technology.

3. Private Sector Leading the Green Transition

With 550 businesses participating, the expo highlights the private sector’s pivotal role in Taiwan’s green transition. Companies specializing in sustainable manufacturing, renewable energy, and AI-based environmental monitoring systems are showcasing their latest innovations.

According to Executive Yuan Secretary-General Kung Ming-hsin (龔明鑫), Taiwan’s industrial landscape has evolved from manufacturing and contract production to developing integrated problem-solving solutions for sustainability.

4. Strengthening Climate Action at the National Level

Since his inauguration in May 2024, President Lai Ching-te (賴清德) has made climate change a top national security priority. His administration established a Climate Change Committee at the Presidential Office, which he personally oversees. The committee’s mission is to:

  • Accelerate Taiwan’s transition to renewable energy.
  • Strengthen cybersecurity against foreign interference in Taiwan’s energy and sustainability infrastructure.
  • Enhance government-industry collaboration on climate adaptation strategies.

Lai recently emphasized that China’s cognitive warfare efforts include economic pressure and cybersecurity threats targeting Taiwan’s sustainability projects. The expo also addresses these concerns, reinforcing the importance of independent, secure, and innovative green solutions.
